Winnie the Bear - Hardcover Edition

Winnie the Bear is a remarkable, little-known story about the origins of the world’s most famous bear - Winnie!  M. A. Appleby has a unique connection to the origins of Winnie-the-Pooh since her father was a good friend of the late Fred Colebourn, son of Harry, the veterinarian who purchased and named a black bear cub from Northern Ontario, Winnie, after his hometown of Winnipeg.  Winnie had a remarkable life and Appleby follows her story and the amazing chain of events that continue to this day.

Winnipeg artist P. R. Hayes created beautiful watercolour illustrations and pencil sketches, based on historic photographs, which accurately depict Harry Colebourn and Winnie the Bear, as well as the Milnes and E. H. Shepard.

The photograph section at the end of the book contains images from the Colebourn Family Archives, the Canadian War Museum Archives, the New York City Public Library Archives, Manitoba Archives, Royal Zoological Society of London Archives, the Fort Garry Horse Archives and the Appleby Family Archives.

This classic hardcover book has been defined by many customers as a family keepsake. It is a navy blue cotton cloth bound book with gold lettering and a laminated dust jacket.

Winnie the Bear was designed by the award-winning Winnipeg company Doowah Design. The hardcover book is printed on 80 lb matte paper and set in Cochin, a font that was popular in the early 20th century.
